What Causes My Dishwasher To leak?

Repair a glass cooktop

You don’t know how handy a dishwasher is until it breaks down and has water leaking from your it. Like all other appliances, Dishwashers require regular maintenance and care to keep them working smoothly and delivering perfectly clean dishes. Often many homeowners fail to provide these services to their dishwashers, which results in dishwasher leaks. Your dishwasher could be leaking for a variety of reasons. The goal of this article is to help you know the causes of your dishwasher leaking issues.

Clogged Dishwasher Filter

The dishwasher filter should be the first item you check. The filter is responsible for capturing food, garbage and other particles left behind after cleaning. You should clean your dishasher’sfilters at last once a month to ensure that your dishwasher runs at optimal efficiency. If you do not clean your filters regularly, they will accumulate food residues or foreign objects. This accumulation will prevent your tableware to reach perfect cleaniliness and in the worst case cause severe leakage. If you notice a significant drop in cleaning performance, take out your dishwasher’s filter and clean it immediately.

Door Seal Leaking

A failing door seal is often the cause of water seeping onto your kitchen floor. To determine if your leaks are a result of faulty door seals, examine the seal on the dishwasher’s door and check whether it is cracked or worn. Make sure it’s clean and that the door shuts securely. In case they are broken, you can attempt to replace them yourselves. Upper seals are often easy to deal with. They are simple to remove and replace. However, it is with the bottom seals that might cause you some issues. To replace them, you’ll need to take the door apart, which should be done by a competent professional.

A leaking Water Valve.

The water valve of your dishwasher works with an anti-flood device. When the anti-flood device in a leaking water valve is in place, it prevents water from flowing out of the appliance when it starts filling up. However, if this anti-flood device is not working properly or is completely down, then the dishwasher will fill up as soon as you turn it on. This can be dangerous for your appliance and your home.

Faulty Air Gap:

One of the most common causes of leaking dishwashing is a faulty air gap. This device is normally located underneath the sink near the drain. It connects to the disposal or dishwasher drain line and creates a safe air gap between where dirty water enters and clean water leaves. This air gap prevents any back siphoning. It stops dirt from traveling through your pipes and causing clogs in your higher plumbing fixtures such as toilets, sinks, bathtubs, etc. A faulty air gap will allow dirty water to flow out through clean lines resulting in dishwasher leaks.

Faulty Pumps:

The pump is a useful component of your dishwasher. It pumps out any dirty water and spins your dishes to dry them. Often these pumps have a pump impeller, which is essential to its good functioning. The pump impeller is a blade that turns and forces the water through it. If the pump impeller has built-up debris inside, such as food particles or powdery soap residue, then it will not spin properly and it will cause dishwasher leaks at times when the water level becomes high enough to reach the blade. This usually happens during periods of heavy usage (i.e., when there are many dishes in the washer) or after a cycle has finished running but before the drain cycle begins.

Faulty Hose Clamps

The hose clamps are devices that connects the drain hose and the circulating hose to the dishwasher pump. The first reason why your Damaged Hose Clamps lead to dishwasher leaks is because of the cracks that form within them over time. The earlier you unveil these cracks, the more chances you have to prevent an eventual dishwasher leak. Damaged Hose Clamps also cause dishwasher leakage when the metal or plastic tubing designed to absorb vibrations fail to do so well. This often results in rust easily corroding the connection between the Hose Clamps and the pump. One more fact to know about damaged hose clamps and their effect on your dishwasher is that they have less contact surface pressure. This means that there is a greater risk of water being forced through cracks in Damaged Hose Clamps causing leaks.
