Keep Your Refrigerator Performing Optimally During Summer.

Keep Refrigerator performing optimally during summer

It is no secret that refrigerators have it easier in winter than in summer. The cold temperatures of the winter agree well with your refrigerator. It reduces the efforts your appliance has to make to cool your products. With summer, it is much different. Summer comes with high temperatures and humidity. These temperatures and humidity are a nightmare for your appliances. Your refrigerator has to put twice the effort to cool your food and keep them fresh during summer. That is why summer is the season of refrigerator issues. Many refrigerators, especially those of a certain age, can’t stand the heat and humidity and give up. Luckily there are ways you can ease the job of your appliance. We’ll see some of them together, and at the end of this article, you will know how to perform simple summer refrigerator maintenance and keep your refrigerator performing optimally.

Set the Right Temperature.

People often believe that the colder a refrigerator is, the better it will conserve food. But unfortunately, that is not true. Refrigerators have an average and right temperature at which they should always be set. That is between 35 and 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures above that might cause the food in your refrigerator to spoil, and temperatures below will cause a waste of energy. That is why it is important to have a refrigerator with a thermometer that can regulate the temperature of your appliance at all times. If your refrigerator does not have a built-in thermometer, then an appliance thermometer will do.

Regularly Clean Your Refrigerator.

Like with all other home appliances, keeping your refrigerator clean is one of the most effective ways to keep your appliance working properly when the temperatures are high. It is recommended to clean your refrigerator at least twice a month and make sure that it remains clean. How do you clean your refrigerator properly? Use a sponge and soapy water to clean the interior of your fridge. Make sure to remove all the dust and lint so that it does not disrupt airflow to the condenser. Check that there is no dust, dirt, or lint on the condenser coil. If there is, use a brush or vacuum cleaner to get rid of it. Keeping your fridge clean will prevent unexpected failures and will keep your refrigerator performing optimally in summer.

Let Your Refrigerator Breathe.

Your refrigerator’s condenser produces a lot of heat. If this heat is not properly dispersed, it will create moisture in your fridge and cause it to break down. One way to prevent that from happening is by creating space around your refrigerator. This space will allow better dispersion of heat. So if your refrigerator is pushed against the wall, change its position by pushing it a little forward. Create a few inches between your refrigerator and the wall or any other thing too close to your refrigerator.

Check The Seals And Gaskets.

A refrigerator should always be hermetically closed to prevent warm air from getting into your refrigerator. Your refrigerator’s gasket and seals are the parts of your appliance that allows it to be airtight. However, these parts tend to tear and wear over time, causing them to leak. If your fridge’s seal and gasket are not in good condition, we advise you to call an expert technician and have them replaced quickly. To check door leaks, take a piece of paper and place it on the door frame. Then, close the door on it and try to pull the paper out without opening the door. If the paper pulls out easily, it means your refrigerator’s seal or gasket is worn out.

Be Careful With Hot Food.

As we mentioned before, refrigerators do not like heat. That is whether the heat is at the exterior or interior of your appliance. The more there is heat in the interior of your refrigerator, the more effort it has to produce to keep the right temperature. That is why putting hot food in your refrigerator is highly unadvised. If you have just cooked or your dish is still hot, let it cool before placing it in the refrigerator. Also, wrap your food and drinks before placing them in the fridge. This will prevent moisture from accumulating and will get your dishes fresh for a longer time.
